Syria's U.N. ambassador on Friday called U.S. accusations that Damascus is interfering in Lebanon "a smear campaign" and insisted that all Syrian intelligence operatives have been withdrawn from the country.
Fayssal Mekdad was responding to concerns raised by U.S. President George W. Bush that Syrian intelligence officers were still operating in Lebanon in violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution demanding the withdrawal of all troops and intelligence operatives.
