Indian Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran, who was in Washington May 16-20 for
meetings with senior Bush administration officials to lay the groundwork
for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit in July, has said he was given no
indication at all that the US would support India's bid for a permanent
seat in the United Nations Security Council if New Delhi agreed not to seek
the veto power.
By the same token, he acknowledged in an informal interaction with
journalists at the Indian embassy, that the US gave absolutely no
indication that it would support India's candidacy for permanent membership
in the Security Council with or without the veto power either.
