Theo Nix Thomas was born in Delray, Florida to Robert E. Nix and Mollie
Coleman Nix. She was the youngest of 10 children. The family moved to
Kansas City, Mo. when she was a young girl. It was where she spent her
early life, went to elementary and high school. She earned a bachelor's
degree in journalism and a master's degree in English at Kansas State
University, and she taught for four years at Lincoln University in
Jefferson City, Missouri.

Thomas was one of a rare breed that could "teach" and could "do." After
teaching at Kansas State, she started her career in journalism at the
