Jan Ullrich can make a case for bad luck. Two years after he won his first Tour de France, along came Lance Armstrong to win six in a row. Now, in his final chance at dethroning the champion, he already has suffered two accidents.
Ullrich entered this year's Tour leaner and fitter than recent years. The day before the race, on a routine training exercise, he slammed headfirst into the back of a team car, cutting his neck close to the jugular vein.
He took the start line at the opening day time trial visibly shaken, and lost 66 seconds to Armstrong.
