An overwhelming number of Americans support organ and tissue donation, but
support among African Americans is less.

While 91 percent of the general public is in favor of donation, support
from the Black community registers at 84 percent, a statistical difference
that concerns African Americans inasmuch as they represent 35 percent of
those waiting to receive kidney transplants.

The disparity in the rate of those who actually take the necessary steps to
commit to donation is even greater: 49 percent for the general population
versus 39 percent for African Americans.
