Article: St. John Missionary Baptist Church starts its centennial celebration

On June 16, the St. John Institutional Missionary Baptist Church will be 99
years old. It is also on that Sunday, that the Church family will
officially began their centennial (100 years) observance that will
culminate on June 18, 2006.

The church was founded in 1906, when a group of Christian entrepreneurs
decided to organize a church. On June 16, of that year, at (what was then
called Ave. G and Wood St.,) now 2nd Ave. and 11th Terr., a frame building,
10 X 12 feet, owned by a member of the church, Rev. S.H. Clark, became
Second Baptist Church. The name was later changed to St. John Institutional
Missionary Baptist Church.
