VIC: Mentally ill at risk in emergency departments
MELBOURNE, Aug 4 AAP - Mentally-ill people are escaping from hospital emergency departments
across Australia and harming or killing themselves because of inadequate resources, a
senior medical figure claims.
Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital emergency department director Gordian Fulde said emergency
departments were increasingly facing violent patients with mental illnesses and did not
have the resources to deal with them.
As a result, he said anecdotal evidence was that some were escaping and going on to
harm themselves.
