Approximately 40 students were feted by the Howard University Alumni Club
and awed by the stories of Catherine C. Blackwell, Howardite of the Year,
and Dr. Jannette Dates, dean of the Howad School of Communications.
In accepting her award, Blackwell spoke of her early days at Howard when
she had a tendency to take her studies lightly. However, she added, it was
studying under some of the great scholars at Howard who took an interest in
her that made her more focused and more aware of the need to become
acquainted with Africa. The spark of interest in Africa was what later
caused her to make 41 trips to the continent, visiting some 65 nations in
