Many years have passed since Howard Beach became more than a beach and more
than a community. It became a war cry for a decade of Black men and women,
students, professionals, and blue-collar men and women of color who became
outraged because a New York City community--by the actions of some of those
who live there was not only racist, but criminal. It is not often in
America that the same community gets that same label two or three times
during a generation, because whatever poisons that gave the community that
label in the first place had not been rooted out.
