As a young White House lawyer, Supreme Court nominee John Roberts cautioned against allowing President Ronald Reagan to say the United States was "the greatest nation God ever created," saying he feared it would lead to political ridicule.

In an Oct. 11 1984 memo, Roberts wrote that according to the Biblical book of Genesis, "God creates things like the heavens and the earth, and the birds and the fishes, but not nations."
