George Melvin Powell, known affectionately as "Mel" was born in Atlanta,
Georgia. He was the sixth of eleven children born to Pastor Willie Mack and
Evangelist Corrine Powell.

After high school, Powell attended San Jose State University excelling in
football and earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. While at the university, he
was a charter member of the Delta Rho Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi
Fraternity, Inc. After moving to Los Angeles, he earned a Master of Arts
degree from Loyola Marymount University and embarked on a career in
education.

His academic career spanned over 20 years as a teacher and administrator in
