Spain will ask Serbia to extradite a Moroccan who allegedly had close ties to the ringleaders of last year's deadly terrorist attacks in Madrid, the government said Friday.

Abdelmajid Bouchar, 22, had been detained in June in Serbia, where he was living under a false name, and was identified Aug. 16 as a suspect wanted by Spanish authorities.

The Spanish government approved seeking his extradition, Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega said Friday at a news conference. The next step is for Spain's Foreign Ministry to send the paperwork to Serbia.
