A Japanese diplomat said Saturday that he doubts that two Japanese schoolteachers missing in Afghanistan have been kidnapped or killed _ but that he has no idea where they are.

The two teachers _ a man and a woman _ crossed into Afghanistan from neighboring Pakistan on Aug. 8 and have not been seen or heard from since, said Kenji Saito, the first secretary at the Japanese Embassy in Kabul.

The two had been expected to return to Japan last week, but have not come home.
