Angela Merkel, the conservative leader from the Communist east who wants to become Germany's first woman chancellor, squared off Sunday in her only live television duel with the incumbent, Gerhard Schroder, in a debate that could decide the outcome of the country's elections Sept. 18.Both candidates, dressed in dark suits, stood a short distance from each other.
