No. 4 seed Francesca Schiavone had to struggle against little-known American Jamea Jackson in the first round of the Wismilak International tennis tournament, but the Italian held on to her nerve to win 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Schiavone blamed her poor showing Monday on tiredness after a 40-hour journey from the U.S. Open due to several flight delays.

"But she is good," she said. "It was the first time that I saw her and I just tried to do my job. I had to run and to fight."

Schiavone won the first set with a dropshot on break point, but powerful serves by Jackson won her the second.
