U.S. President George W. Bush met Monday with Thailand's prime minister, discussing a possible free trade agreement between the countries and ways to combat the spread of the deadly bird flu virus.

A group of U.S. lawmakers had hoped Bush also would take Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to task publicly for what they consider his cozy relationship with the military dictatorship in neighboring Myanmar and for "giving himself Draconian powers" to curb the democratic freedoms of Thai citizens.
