Gerhard Schroeder's Social Democrats are bargaining for a strong position in any possible coalition led by conservative challenger Angela Merkel _ but a senior official's comments Friday suggested party members would find such a deal a tough sell.

Schroeder and Merkel, along with Social Democratic chairman Franz Muentefering and Merkel's fellow conservative leader Edmund Stoiber, held secretive talks Thursday aimed at ending their three-week dispute over who will lead Germany. They aim to reach a deal by Sunday.
