Democracy moves slowly. Over the last few months, more and more people have
come to doubt the wisdom of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the
competence of the president. This shift in opinion has come in small
stages, spread by the slow but steady sharing of experiences. In towns
across America, families are burying their dead sons and daughters. These
losses still touch local communities even though they are kept from mass
audiences by Bush's directive to show no pictures of returning coffins or
graves. High schools honor their graduates lost to this war. Local
newspapers give detailed biographies of those fallen. Communities gather to
