Security forces fatally shot six suspected foreign Islamic militants and arrested two others in a shootout at a road block in a tribal region in northwestern Pakistan on Saturday, an intelligence official said.

The gunbattle occurred near Ladha, a small town in the South Waziristan tribal region, the official said on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to make media comments.

The militants, who were traveling in a pickup truck, opened fire at the soldiers after they were ordered to surrender. The troops retaliated, he said.
