Kenya stepped up preparations against bird flu Friday, warning the public that infections could be spread during the slaughter, de-feathering and butchering of poultry.

The public information campaign began as Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and Ethiopia also took measures. Earlier this week, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization said that the risk of bird flu spreading to the Middle East and Africa has markedly increased, and that it was worried East Africa in particular may be poorly prepared.
