Fed: Greek feta cheese ruling not binding in Australia
CANBERRA, Oct 26 AAP - Australian cheese makers will still be able to sell what they
call feta cheese, despite a court ruling giving Greece exclusive rights to the name within
Europe.
Dismissing an appeal by Denmark and Germany, the European Court of Justice has ruled
the name feta is reserved exclusively for white salty cheese from Greece, as it was registered
as a protected designation of origin in 2002.
The ruling is a victory for Greece, where feta cheese is believed to have been produced
for around 6,000 years.
