The Hong Kong government has some new advice for the public about avoiding bird flu: Don't kiss your pet parrot.
People should also wash their hands after touching birds, wear gloves while cleaning up droppings and keep pets away from human food, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said in a statement.
"Bird owners should not kiss their pets," the statement said in its first sentence.
The hygiene alert was issued Monday as mainland China _ just across Hong Kong's border _ dealt with outbreaks of bird flu among chickens and geese.
