Hundreds of Congolese troops and U.N. peacekeepers began an operation Monday aimed at flushing heavily armed Rwandan rebels from the dense forests of eastern Congo.

The operation in the North Kivu province involving 2,000 Congolese troops and 500 peacekeepers was the first time Congo's government has used force against the Rwandan Hutu rebels since the expiration a month ago of a for all foreign armed groups to leave the country.
