WA: Fed govt should give Viarsa back, says lawyer for captain

PERTH, Nov 6 AAP - The federal government should hand back the impounded Uruguayan
vessel Viarsa 1 after its captain and crew were found not guilty of illegal fishing, the
captain's lawyer says.

A District Court jury in Perth has acquitted the five men - from Uruguay, Spain and
Chile - of illegal fishing charges brought against them more than two years ago.

The men were arrested after a three-week, 7,000km chase across the treacherous Southern
Ocean in August 2003 that only concluded when armed South African Fisheries officers and
security guards boarded the Viarsa.
