Article: Official: India opposes referring Iran to Security Council over its nuclear program

India on Monday said it has reached a broad understanding with China and Russia that Iran should not be referred to the U.N. Security Council for possible sanctions over its nuclear program.

During a phone call Monday, Indian External Affairs Minister K. Natwar Singh and Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing agreed that "a consensus should be worked out in consultation with (European countries) and Iran," said Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna.

"They have also been in touch with the Russian foreign minister and have a broad understanding that the matter should remain out of the Security Council," he said.
