The town is inhabited mostly by Mam Indians, who are eager to protect their identity, despite the growing pressure from tourism.
Mam Indians have been under pressure for the last 500 years, since the Spanish invasion. They have managed to maintain Mayan beliefs. The guerrilla and the military repression of the 1980s, and the unfair distribution of the land have led many of them to flee towards lower lands, to the capital, or to the USA.
