The South Korean port of Busan will bid to host the Summer Olympics in 2020, the city's mayor announced Tuesday.

Hur Nam-sik formally launched Busan's bid at a ceremony on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, which culminates in a summit of 21 leaders from around the Pacific Rim on Friday and Saturday.

Hur said Busan, which hosted the Asian games in 2002 and was a venues for some soccer World Cup matches the same year, "has a high possibility of being selected as the host city for the Summer Olympics for its experience of hosting international events and excellent infrastructure."
