Brazil and Paraguay have reached an agreement to jointly combat the spread of foot-and-mouth disease that calls for better monitoring and joint vaccinations along a 1,600-kilometer (1,000-mile) border where animals that sometimes roam freely between the two countries.

The measures take effect in December and will be administered by government veterinarians and animal health authorities from Brazil and Paraguay, Brazil's Agriculture Ministry said Thursday.
