New Jersey smoking ban moves a step closer -- Senate passes measure exempting gaming areas

A decade-long drive to make New Jersey's public places free of cigarette smoke cleared a significant hurdle Thursday when the state Senate passed a ban on lighting up in restaurants, bars, bowling alleys and other establishments.

Only the gaming areas of casinos would be exempt under the measure, which was approved by a vote of 29-7.

But before smokers are forced to go cold turkey in public, the bill needs approval by the Assembly. If it fails ...
