Emergency contraception (EC) has been around for a while but I have found
that many of my patients are unaware that it exists. It is not a routine
form of birth control but can be beneficial in reducing the likelihood of
pregnancy up to 75 percent in specific situations.

Some instances in which EC can be beneficial include rape, breaking or
slippage of a condom, when birth control was not used or was used
incorrectly, and unplanned sexual intercourse. Emergency contraception is
not an abortifacient (in other words, it does not cause interruption of an
already existing pregnancy).
