Judge Samuel Alito takes his first step toward a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court with a preordained Senate Judiciary Committee victory, but the strength of opposition among Democrats could forecast the margin by which he will be confirmed in the Senate.

The Republican-controlled committee was to advance Alito's nomination Tuesday. All 10 of the committee's Republican senators have announced their support for President George W.
