When abused women arrive at the safety of a battered women's shelter, they
often have their children in tow and not much more than the clothes on
their backs. The children, particularly, will have left behind their most
familiar and comforting belongings, like that dog-eared copy of The Cat in
the Hat and the beloved stuffed monkey whose fur has balded.

These items are hardly luxuries for children, who need playtime and
downtime in order to learn and grow. Those familiar belongings were a
source of comfort and reassurance, especially to children living in
typically chaotic situations of domestic violence. Now they find themselves
