The British government on Saturday welcomed the vote by the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency to report Iran to the U.N. Security Council regarding its nuclear program.

The resolution approved by the International Atomic Energy Agency's board of directors expressed concern that Tehran's nuclear program may not be "exclusively for peaceful purposes."

British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said the 27-3 vote, with five abstentions, by the IAEA board in Vienna, Austria, showed "the international community's determination to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons in the Middle East."
