PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — It hardly seemed the sort of scene that could determine the Mets' fate, but here it was.
Pedro Martinez walked onto the outfield grass at the Mets' minor league complex, wearing shorts and the long-awaited spikes from Nike. His right foot was encased in a larger than usual shoe, padded high above his ankle. The bottom was set tight by a brace to restrict movement, with padding dotted throughout to ease the pain on the battered foot.
