Hamas official dismisses Arab press report of Iran giving US$250 million to Palestinians

A senior Hamas official has dismissed a report in the Arab press that Iran would give as much as US$250 million to enable the militant group to run the Palestinian Authority after the expected halt of European and U.S. aid.

Moussa Abu Marzouk said Tuesday that Iran had promised "to support the Palestinian people in general, without specifying the kind or amount of support."

The deputy political chief of Hamas appeared to be referring to a pledge made by Ali Larijani, the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, in talks with Hamas political leader Khaled Mashaal in Tehran on Feb. 22.
