China suspended the supply of live poultry and pet birds to Hong Kong for three weeks after the Chinese health ministry reported a new human death from bird flu in neighboring Guangdong province, officials said.

Although no bird flu outbreak has been reported in Guangdong, the decision was made to "reduce the contact between humans and live poultry as well as to prevent the accumulation of live poultry in the markets," the government said in a statement late Sunday.
