Lactose intolerance is the inability to tolerate dairy products, or more
specifically the sugar in milk - lactose, which is found in such foods as
milk, cheese and ice cream.

Lactose intolerance results from a shortage of the digestive enzyme
lactase, which breaks down the sugar in dairy to ease digestion. If an
individual's body does not produce enough lactase to digest the amount of
lactose consumed, they will suffer from symptoms of lactose intolerance.

Common symptoms of lactose intolerance include painful abdominal cramps,
bloating, gas and diarrhea, and can range in severity from moderate to
