Britain may try to extend the length of time terrorist suspects can be held without trial, despite a parliamentary defeat on the issue, the government's law-and-order chief said Tuesday.

Home Secretary Charles Clarke said he might reconsider the 28-day detention period agreed by Parliament when he introduces new anti-terrorism legislation in 2007 or 2008.
