A court-martial jury began deliberating Wednesday on a sentence for an Army dog handler convicted of tormenting inmates at the Abu Ghraib prison with his snarling canine.
Sgt. Michael J. Smith, 24, faces up to 8 1/2 years in prison for five offenses, including conspiring with another dog handler to try to frighten detainees into soiling themselves, and directing his dog to lick peanut butter off other soldiers' bodies.
Smith appeared unrepentant when he addressed the jury Tuesday, shortly after he was convicted.
"Soldiers are not supposed to be soft and cuddly," he said.
