A group opposed to South Dakota's ban on nearly all abortions began a petition drive Friday to let voters decide the fate of the law.

The state recently approved the strictest abortion law in the United States _ a ban on all abortions except to save a woman's life, with no exceptions for rape or incest _ and the measure is set to take effect July 1.
