Voters in Thailand prepared to go to the polls Sunday in a snap general election that amounts to a plebiscite on the leadership of Prime Minster Thaksin Shinawatra, the target of weeks of street protests for alleged corruption and abuse of power.

All three opposition parties in Parliament are boycotting the polls, and asking Thailand's 45 million registered voters to cast their ballots but tick a box indicating they abstain from choosing a candidate.
