One year ago, Thaksin Shinawatra was the uncontested master of Thailand's political world. He had become the first civilian prime minister to serve out a full four-year term in Thailand's fragile democracy, and led his party to a robust re-election victory.
On Tuesday, he said he would step down from office after his party's disappointing showing in national elections that he called to defuse mass street protests over allegations of corruption and abuse of power.
The 56-year-old self-made billionaire rose to power in 2001 on a raft of populist policies as Thailand was recovering from Asia's devastating financial crisis.
