SINN Fein had its annual party conference in Dublin last weekend and, for a
party that thinks of itself as central to the future of Ireland and very
much at the cutting edge of change in the country, it all seemed very
staged and dated, like a party meeting in Moscow in the old Soviet days.

Even the language Gerry Adams used in his speech, with heroic appeals to
the comrades both at home and internationally, had the tone of a bygone
era.

They were trying, of course. So although at least two of the Three Amigos
from Colombia were wandering around the hall, they were not invited up on
