Brazil launched its bird flu prevention program on Friday, announcing it will only permit commercial shipment of live chickens from meat packers registered with the federal government and monitored by satellite.

The government said the decision, effective Monday, also was valid to eggs and poultry meat.

Brazil is the world's No. 1 chicken exporter and the arrival of the disease in the country would drastically reduce profits of some of Brazil's largest meat exporters. It could also have side effects on feed suppliers in the soy and corn industry.
