Article: Biotech company Genentech takes formal steps to expand Avastin use

Genentech Inc., which seeks to expand use of its Avastin cancer drug, has filed with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration a supplemental license application to use Avastin in combination with chemotherapy for treatment of non-small cell lung cancer.

In addition, the company also plans to submit a similar license application for use of Avastin to treat metastatic breast cancer in the second quarter of 2006.

Avastin is already approved to treat metastatic colorectal cancer in combination with chemotherapy, but oncologists have been using Avastin to treat certain cases of lung and breast cancer on an off-label basis.
