Sam Lacy covered Joe Louis, heavyweight champion of the world in the World
War II era. He helped Jackie Robinson become the first African-American to
play major league baseball in 1947. He wrote about the Orioles when they
came to Baltimore in 1954.
And astonishingly, Sam Lacy is still chronicling sports today for the
Afro-American in Baltimore.
"This is Black History Month, so I'm planning a series on the great
athletes I have covered," Lacy said in a telephone interview. "Last week I
did something on all the Black coaches."
The man is 98 years old. (This is not a typo.) He was born Oct. 23, 1903.
