Negotiators sought to avert any clash over a Japanese plan to survey waters near a cluster of disputed islets, a top Japanese official said Thursday as South Korea warned of the danger of a confrontation.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe said there were "unofficial" contacts under way between the two nations, which both claim the rocky outcroppings that lie in rich fishing waters in the Sea of Japan.

There were media reports that Japan had offered to halt the survey if South Korea dropped efforts to add or change place names ...
