Before sportswriters left for spring training in early February 1946, the
New York chapter of the Baseball Writers Association met to celebrate, in
the words of one writer, "the glorification of baseball." Twelve hundred
journalists, owners, managers, players, politicians, and other dignitaries
attended the annual event at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, where sportswriters
took turns spoofing the national pastime in song, skit and minstrel show.
The highlight of the evening, one columnist wrote, was a parody of Jackie
Robinson. Four months earlier, Brooklyn Dodgers president Branch Rickey
signed Robinson to a contract with the organization's top minor league
