Negroes Have Always Had Guns: Documentary Examines Black Power and the Pistol

Black Americans have been no strangers to the power of the gun, whether to
defend against the Ku Klux Klan in the South or, in the case of the Black
Panthers, the police brutality of the major cities. The documentary
"Negroes With Guns" examined this relationship -- through the civil rights
career of the late Robert F. Williams -- last Tuesday at Howard
University's WHUT Studios.

Williams came to national prominence in the 1950s when he organized a Black
militia group in Monroe, N.C. in response to increased intimidation by
Whites after advocating for the integration of public swimming pools.
