History is filled with people who risked their lives for a cause they
thought was right.
Mahatma Gandhi fasted to improve the lives of the Hindu Untouchables. Joan
of Arc was burned at the stake partly because she insisted on helping
Charles VII. Harriet Tubman was said to be unafraid of being caught while
she was working with the Underground Railroad.
John Lewis and Jim Zwerg both believed that Blacks and Whites should have
equal rights. They nearly paid for that belief with their lives. Their
story -- a part of the struggle for Civil Rights -- is found in "Freedom
Riders" by Ann Bausum.
